silverware, so he smiled again and said, “I have to go to school now.” He wiped his chin and

squared his shoulders. “I have to ask you to leave.” Chad sat back and pouted. When his head went down, Ricky noticed an adorable little

cleft in the center of his chin.

“I’m sorry, buddy,” Ricky said in a soft, sincere voice. This was killing him.

“I thought you’d let me stay for a while.” He was still pouting, but now he was looking

up at Ricky with those dark, easy eyes.

Ricky’s face felt hot and he found it hard to speak. “I’m really, really sorry. I have to go

to school now.”

Chad finished his coffee and rubbed his thighs. His legs were spread apart but his crotch

was still covered with the tail of the long plaid shirt. “I’m sorry, too, Ricky. I thought you were

different. I thought just once I could depend on someone.”

The horn went off again, three times. Only louder, with a sense of urgency. Ricky raised

his right hand and said, “I’ll be right back,” as he turned and jogged to the front door.

When he stepped outside, Leyland was waiting for him in the driveway. He was driving

his mother’s brown minivan and there was loud, obnoxious music blaring from the radio. All of a

sudden, Leyland seemed so much younger and inexperienced. Ricky waved and said, “You go

ahead without me.”

Leyland lifted his hands from the steering wheel and asked, “He didn’t leave?”

Ricky knew he was talking about Chad. “He can’t leave.” He didn’t want to go into

details with Leyland. He wouldn’t have understood what Ricky was feeling and experiencing. To

Leyland, Chad was nothing more than a common prostitute and Ricky didn’t feel like standing

there and defending him in the middle of the driveway.

“He can’t leave?” “Just go without me,” Ricky said. “I’ll see you later today.” Then he ran back inside the

house, hoping he’d figure out what to do with Chad so he could go to school and get into a good

college.

If this had been anyone else, like Dawn the she-male or another prostitute, Ricky would

have been firmer. He would have lowered his voice, pointed to the front door, and demanded he

leave. But he couldn’t seem to do this with Chad. When he looked into Chad’s deep brown eyes,

the only thing he wanted to do was put his arms around him and protect him. This protective

instinct trumped sex and all the passion still surging through his body. And when Ricky thought

about Chad being beaten, he imagined his fist going down Carson’s throat.

But he had to do something about Chad, so he crossed into the kitchen, where he found

Chad washing the breakfast dishes, and he said, “I just want to go back to normal. I want my life

back and I want my angel back. Is that too much to ask?”

Chad turned and leaned against the sink. He smiled and asked, “Did you enjoy last night,

and the night before that?”

Ricky stared down at his shoes. “Are you talking about, you know, what we did in bed?”

His voice was so soft it was almost a whisper.
